The Ron Howard-directed film starring the luminous Cate Blanchett and grizzled old Tommy Lee Jones inspired me to explore the novel upon which the movie was based. Such exploits can be an unfulfilling adventures (depending upon the book and the cinematic adaptation) but I found The Missing to be a strong and intriguing movie, and the novel, as usual, provided even deeper insight and background regarding characterizations and plot developments. Tautly written in prose that engages the reader and paints a stirring picture of life in the West not long after the Civil War, we meet a host of fascinating characters: Maggie, the devout rancher's wife who is as beautiful and as unforgiving as the vast landscape itself; her father, a white man who seemingly abandoned Maggie and her mother long ago to fall-in with the Native American lifestyle, and who turns-up most unexpectedly seeking a place to die (and possible redemption); Dot, Maggie's gritty, determined young daughter who is looking for the restoration of her family through devotion to her grandfather. All of them are caught-up in quite a drama as they decide to risk everything to track a black magic shaman whose gang of outlaws had kidnapped Maggie's eldest daughter, Lily, in order to sell her across the border in Mexico. The tale is gripping and certainly provides the reader with vivid characters, settings, and plot twists to please the imagination. One doesn't have to be a particular fan of Wild West novels to enjoy the book; it's a very satisfying thriller with universal themes. Still, if you're an admirer of the movie and crave an authentically crafted tale in an Old West framework, this is a must-read. The novel features a key plot-twist/revelation/trajectory that I wish they would have included in the film, but I can see why it would have complicated the straightforward intention of the film's creators to preserve Maggie's father as an ultimately mysterious, largely unexplained character ... along with his back-story. The book is whip-crackingly good enough to keep you well-entertained and you'll be engrossed with it for two nights as you race along with Maggie, Dot, and old "S!?t-for-Luck" toward a good, old-fashioned heart-pounder of a conclusion.

The Missing Thomas Eidson 9780007181735 Books Reviews

Could not put this one down. It was such a good book that I ordered a couple of his other book. This book was a great read and I highly recommend it.
The book, "The Missing," by Thomas Eidson is suspenseful, exciting and unpredictable. The movie is excellent; however, the book is better. Neither are profane and both take you back to the western life and the daily trials they had to endure. I have ordered two more books by Eidson, I enjoy his writing.
very good to read
I have never had trouble with a movie and a book! But I loved the movie and wasn't all that thrilled with the book! The book is well written it flows and it has a message ! I just preferred the movie version
I thought that it would be more like the film "The Missing". I did like the Forward added to this reprint, however.
The original title of this book is "The Last Ride". I love western, historical fiction. Well written, great story line about family, loss and forgiveness. Lots of action and indians. There are 2 other books in the trilogy, though unrelated stories. The movie is great, too, with Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchet. Highly recommend.
This is a very good story. Actually a great western. If you decide to purchase buy the paperback edition. I made the mistake of purchase the version. There is so many typos that after the first chapter I lost interest and started looking for the typo instead of enjoying the book. How this can be sold for $9.99 by is a rip off. I went out and found a paperback copy and now I am enjoying the book. NO TYPOS. Don`t make the same error I made and purchase the edition. You will be wasting your money.
One star for , because I had to give something. Five stars for the paperback.
