Southern Charmer A Friends to Lovers Romance Charleston Heat Book 1 eBook Jessica Peterson

Not long ago I read a book set in Charleston, written by a well known author, and was disappointed that she never made the charm, quaintness and vitality of the city come alive. She might get some tips from this author, because Peterson is spot on with her vivid descriptions of sights, sounds, smells and the vibe of the city, which made the setting unfold in living color in my mind. Peterson has definitely taken her writing to the next level, and the authentic, life-like portrayal of this city and its culture is just one small way. I’ve read all of her Flings With Kings series and enjoyed them, but the early copy I read of this book blew me away!

Take a buttoned up, always proper, living her life for others Yankee girl and drop her in the path of a laid back, cigar smoking, shirtless, successful southern chef. Then throw in some guinea fowl, a dog named Billy, reality show references, and a couple of existential crises and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a terrific read. I loved everything about this book. The setting, the storyline, the secondary characters and, of course, Eli and Olivia. They each absconded with my heart in their own way.

Eli and Olivia both have a lot of soul searching to do as they seek to find their authentic selves while dealing with their growing feelings for each other. Their path to forever is rutted and strewn with rocks and brush, but I enjoyed every dip and bump and snap of twigs. Olivia's character as a budding romance novelist gives fascinating insight into the writing process, and Eli’s skill as a chef turns food preparation into an act of love and meals into an event of the heart that feeds the soul. Their story is poignant and heartfelt, and humorous and hot. Their chemistry was so intense I’m pretty sure I saw steam coming out of my Kindle at one point. But it’s the bravery of self-discovery, the characters' vulnerability, and the heartfelt emotion of their story that really makes this book. Don’t miss this fantastic, evocative, satisfying read, and your chance to fall in love with Eli and Olivia.

Southern Charmer A Friends to Lovers Romance Charleston Heat Book 1 eBook Jessica Peterson Reviews

Southern Charmer is a beautifully written love story! Eli and Olivia are definitely at the center of this love story. However, it is also a love story written to the city of Charleston, to writing (romance in particular), and to following your passion in life. Ms. Peterson does an amazing job of bringing the characters and story to life. The details are lucid. They penetrate the senses and immerse the reader into the characters points of view. You can almost see and smell the atmosphere.

Elijah Jackson is a passionate, creative, charming man. He is a highly regarded chef and restaurateur. Cooking food with love and simplicity is what he's meant to do. He doesn't put on pretenses or play games. Eli knows who he is and revels in that knowledge. At least until he experiences something that shakes a bit of his confidence....failure.

Olivia Gates (Wilson) is a hard working, accomplished, and brilliant woman. She is a tenured professor with seemingly everything a woman could possibly hope to attain. Yet, she yearns for something more. Something like...happiness. After a life changing moment, she puts a pause to the life she has always known. She heads to Charleston in hopes of fulfilling a dream that she has subconsciously stifled.

The chemistry between Eli and Olivia is flirty, fun, and endearing. Theirs is a slow burn stoked by patience and friendship. As their connection deepens, the heat between them intensifies. These characters have impassioned and honest conversations. They grow and blossom together. The support and encouragement in this story is truly uplifting. Eli and Olivia encounter setbacks and conflict through their journey to happily ever after. This makes them work harder to become the best version of themselves. And to fight for a partnership that empowers them. Their determination and dreams pave a discerning path of devotion and love.
Southern Charmer was absolute perfection and had the BEST characters- a swoony romance-reading chef hero, and a strong smart female professor/writer needing to escape her life for a bit. I just can't gush enough about the dialog and chemistry between Eli and Olivia- I always enjoy a slow burn, and this one certainly paid off. One of my favorite parts of the book (it was so meta!) was seeing the journey Olivia took as she wrote her first romance novel, My Enemy the Earl. Historical romance is not my usual genre- but I would love to read Olivia's book about Gunnar and Cate! Southern Charmer was a fabulous start to the Charleston Heat series and I am looking forward to reading Luke's story!
Peterson is a newish author for me, but I heard so much great buzz about this book specifically Eli and the city of Charleston. I couldn't agree more with the positive feedback! Eli, a successful chef and yogi in Charleston, has a failure on his hands. As his second restaurant and his heart work is suffering brutal reviews and is bleeding money. In comes Olivia, who is running after turning down a marriage proposal from her perfect fiance and perfect life, as his new neighbor.

Sparks fly as she tries her heart's work at writing her first romance novel and discovering herself and Charleston as well as Eli's sharing of food and passion for both of their work. It's one of the most gorgeous weaving of food, travel, and personal discovery that I've ever written. Their story parallels the story Olivia's writing, so while you know where it's headed you still can't stop turning the page. The food, the city, the characters all exist beyond the page in this book. It's really an amazing feat for the author!

In the end, this book is a love story written to love stories as well as finding and fighting for your passion. Easily one of the best books I've read in 2018. Get it!
