More people should give light novels a chance, especially this one. Kino no Tabi, or, "Kino's Journey," follows the adventures of the namesake traveler and her talking motorbike companion, Hermes, as they journey from country to country. In their world, each country is a closed-off place that lives in their own unique way, a way that's often obtuse to outsiders. It's a fascinating series of short stories about traveling through a very interesting, unique world, and I carry it around with me to read in my spare time because it's so fascinating.

The only downside is that only Volume 1 has ever been translated; and there are substantially more. They are not particularly chronologic, and there's no overarching plot, but it's simply a shame that most people will miss out on the rest of Kino's Journeys due to a language barrier.

But that aside, this is definitely a novel worth picking up for those who are interested. It's charming, and it draws you in -- give it a shot!

You're considering grabbing this book because you watched the anime based on it and you're hoping it's just as awesome.

Well. Usually the film isn't as good as the book it is based on. This time? The book doesn't measure up. You won't get any new content or perspective, I think. You won't like it as much. Feel free to buy and read it, but if you skip it you won't miss out. It's a "pretty good" book that spawned an amazing film version. You'll return to the film over and over. The book? Once will be plenty.
With an interesting premise, the book follows the episodes of an androgynous girl and her motorcylce interlocuteur. Episodic in nature, it is structured like anime but not exactly the same as the animated version. Well translated. Unfortunate not to have Tokyo Pop still publishing works like thiis.
It was from a library in Utah. It had all the library stickers and everything. For some reason that tickled me ^-^
It was relatively worn but looked fine considering it was a library book.

And It's a great read. I recommend it to anyone who's watched the anime Kino's Journey or not. Also if you enjoy this book You should watch the anime adaptation Kino's Journey.

My only complaint is that more of this authors books are not published in English.
Wonderful stories that I was introduced through the anime by the same name, wonderful book neat illustrations, hope others in the series are translated soon!
I am an adult fan of the series, and I'm coming out in favor of this version as well.

The only (minor) nit that I have to pick on this book is the fact that it's linear (by time). Many people I've talked to about the anime series say that part of the appeal is the fragmentation of the episodes, and trying to figure out what events fit where.

Other than that, I think that the translation is very good and clear. I hope the next one will come out very soon. )
Kino no Tabi is one of the best examples of why I enjoy Japanese media. They have a very different method of storytelling than the west. The author creates a world full of countries that are so culturally different that the reader wonders if the stories told are taking place on the same planet. It's a great story of travels and exploration of the world and the human mind.
